چکیده

ABSTRACT A new paradigm of Coulter counting is developed using electrohydrodynamic liquid jets in lieu of solid state pores as the sensing aperture. The electrohydrodynamic jet was successfully used to detect micron-sized particles through resistive pulse sensing. Similar to conventional Coulter counting, the relative current change is proportional to the particle-tojet volume ratio. Compared to its conventional counterpart, the new Coulter counting technique with a liquid sensing aperture has a major advantage of being non-clogging to impurities and agglomerates.

Platelet counting using the Coulter electronic counter.

A method for counting platelets in dilutions of platelet-rich plasm using the Coulter electronic counter is described.(1) The results obtained show that such platelet counts are at least as accurate as the best methods of visual counting. The various technical difficulties encountered are discussed.

Electronic cell counting to measure total cell numbers in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid.

Cell counting of bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid is performed manually in routine practice. This has both methodological and inherent errors; however, the accuracy and suitability of automated counting devices have been questioned. In this study, a Coulter Counter D Industrial model was calibrated and then used to measure the total cell count in unprocessed bronchoalveolar lavage fluid, and ...

Reliable, Accurate Determination of the Leukocyte Differential of Leukopenic Samples by Using Hematoflow Method

BACKGROUND Hematology analyzers may ineffectively recognize abnormal cells, and manual differential counts may be imprecise for leukopenic samples. We evaluated the efficacy of the Hematoflow method for determining the leukocyte differential in leukopenic samples and compared this method with the manual differential method. METHODS We selected 249 blood samples from 167 patients with leukopen...

Accuracy of platelet counting by automated hematologic analyzers in acute leukemia and disseminated intravascular coagulation: potential effects of platelet activation.

Platelet counting in patients with acute leukemia or disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) may have a risk for erroneous counts owing to the presence of nonplatelet particles or platelet activation. We evaluated automated platelet counting methods using the Abbott Cell-Dyn Sapphire (Abbott Diagnostics, Santa Clara, CA), Sysmex XE-2100 (Sysmex, Kobe, Japan), ADVIA 2120 (Siemens Diagnostic...

The Coulter Principle: Foundation of an Industry

Introduced in the mid-1950s, the Coulter Principle became the foundation of an industry responding to the need for automated cell-counting instruments. The industry developed in three acts, as Wallace H. Coulter and his brother Joseph R. Coulter, Jr., developed the simple idea of passing cells through a sensing aperture. In Act I, Wallace’s desire to automate the routine erythrocyte count led t...
